Tricorn Centre

Brief Overview: The Tricorn Centre was designed by Owen Luder & Rodney Gordon.  It was constructed at a cost of £2million and opened in 1966.  Despite housing one of the first Virgin Megastores and the largest Laser Quest in Europe, the centre didn't gain the traction anticipated- with many of the premium tenants they hoped would move in not doing so.  In the 1980's is was voted the third ugliest building in Europe, in 2001 it was voted the most hated building in the UK with Prince Charles describing it as 'a mildewed lump of elephant droppings'.  Despite this, it had a loyal following who appreciated it as an iconic piece of Brutalist architecture, and attempts were made throughout the 1990's to get the Tricorn Centre listed.   Each attempt however failed as the Centre continued to fall into disrepair and shops continued to vacate.  In 2002 the last shop closed it's doors, and in 2004 the Centre was demolished.  The site now serves as a ground level open air car park.  Brutalism is Dead; Long Live Tricorn Centre.
