St Peter's Seminary

Location: Cardross, Scotland
Architect: Isi Metzstein & Andy MacMillan of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia
Completed: 1966
Status: Category A Listed
Brief Overview: St Peter's Seminary is a former Roman Catholic seminary.  Located on Kilmahew Estate, the architects developed a plan whereby a series of striking modern Brutalist buildings would wrap around the existing Kilmahew House.  It was conceived in 1953 but by time it was realised in 1966 candidates entering into the priesthood were in decline, and the building was never at full capacity.  Use switched to a drug rehabilitation centre in 1983 but unresolved maintenance issues that had always plagued the modern buildings meant from 1984 use was restricted to the Victorian mansion Kilmahew House only, before closing in 1987.  The site, from this point continued to fall into decay, but despite this the modern buildings were Category A Listed by Historic Scotland in 1992.  Kilmahew House sadly was demolished following a fire in 1995 .  The struggle to save and restore St Peter's Seminary is well documented, with many organisations, companies and individuals recognising it's importance and potential.  Having various amounts of engagement over the years, the list includes Twentieth Century Society, Historic Scotland, World Monuments Fund, Urban Splash and Avanti Architects.  In 2005 St Peter's Seminary was named Scotland's greatest Post WWII building by Prospect magazine, while in 2019 the Archdiocese of Glasgow famously referred to St Peters Seminary as an 'albatross around the neck' of the archdiocese.  In July 2020, the site was transferred at no cost to the Kilmahew Education Trust.

Our concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
