Brief Overview:
The Dorman Long Tower was constructed as part of the coal-handling plant for the Redcar steelworks. Despite heritage listing being briefly granted, it was demolished in 2021, sparking widespread local protest.

Dorman Long Tower, Middlesbrough

Industrial buildings deserve memorials too. This Dorman Long Tower miniature concrete model is for Teessiders who watched the 56-metre coal-handling tower stand over the steelworks from 1955 until its demolition in 2021. It was built by Dorman Long, the company behind the Sydney Harbour and Tyne bridges. Its blunt concrete frame was briefly listed before it came down amid local protest. This concrete model of the Dorman Long Tower keeps it upright at 8cm, a small monument for a desk, shelf or mantelpiece. It's made for steelworkers and their families, Middlesbrough and Redcar locals, and anyone who loves industrial and Brutalist architecture, and it's a meaningful Teesside gift. As a miniature concrete building, it has the weight and grit of the real thing.
