Building Information

Location: Southampton, England
Architect: Farmer & Dark
Completed: 1965
Status: Closed 2013, to be demolished Brief Overview: Dubbed 'The Flying Saucer' and looking like something straight off Tracey Island- Fawley Control Centre remained very much unchanged from when it was built in 1965 to when it closed.  Fawley Power Station was closed in 2013, but the Control Centre was still in use to control a number of other power stations across the country until 2016.  Since 2019 the site has been under phased demolition, and  plans have been developed to potentially build around 1.500 on the site.

Fawley Control Centre, Southampton

It looked like it had landed from a 1960s TV series, and locals called it the Flying Saucer. The Fawley Control Centre miniature concrete model captures Farmer & Dark's 1965 control building at Fawley Power Station on Southampton Water. It barely changed from opening day until 2016, when it stopped controlling power stations, and the site has since been under phased demolition. This concrete model of Fawley Control Centre keeps that circular, space-age form at 7cm. It's a piece of concrete art for a desk or shelf, made in an edition of 200. It's for power station workers and their families, Hampshire locals, sci-fi fans and lovers of retro-futurist Brutalist architecture, and it's a gift that starts conversations. Each one is hand-cast in solid concrete and comes gift-boxed.
