Model 021_Forton Services – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings make the journey as memorable as the destination. Forton Services, with its distinctive hexagonal tower and futuristic viewing deck, has been a landmark on the M6 since the 1960s. Known officially as the Pennine Tower, it was designed to give travellers panoramic views over Lancashire and the fells beyond as a rare moment of architectural ambition in motorway service design.
I’ve always loved how unexpected it feels. Capturing the tower’s unusual geometry in miniature was an engineering challenge, ensuring the silhouette stayed true. It’s playful and purposeful at the same time, and I wanted the model to hold both qualities.
A small cast of one of Britain’s most recognisable roadside landmarks.

Brief Overview:
Forton Services is a motorway service station on the M6 notable for its Pennine Tower, a 72-foot hexagonal concrete structure with an observation deck and restaurant. Built during the optimistic years of Britain’s motorway expansion, it remains a striking example of mid-century roadside architecture and an enduring point of reference for travellers.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials
Materials
My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
