Brief Overview:
The Nakagin Capsule Tower was a pioneering example of Metabolist architecture, designed to allow prefabricated capsules to be added, removed, or replaced over time. Though the concept was never fully realised in practice, its radical design made it a global icon. Demolished in 2022, it continues to inspire architects, designers, and dreamers around the world.

Nakagin Capsule Tower, Tokyo

It was built to change over time, and instead it became a legend. The Nakagin Capsule Tower miniature concrete model captures Kisho Kurokawa's 1972 landmark of Japanese Metabolism in Tokyo. Its prefabricated capsules, with round porthole windows, were bolted to concrete cores and designed to be swapped out over time. The swap never happened, and the tower was demolished in 2022, but it remains a global icon. This concrete model of the Nakagin Capsule Tower keeps the stacked capsules and portholes at 9.5cm, a piece of concrete art for a desk, shelf or studio table. It's made for architects, Tokyo lovers, design students, and fans of Brutalist and Metabolist architecture, and it's a gift for anyone who mourned its loss. Each one is hand-cast in solid concrete.
