Building Information

Location: Naha, Okinawa, Japan
Architect: Ishimoto Architectural & Engineering Firm
Completed: 2007
Status: Still in use as museum and art centre

Brief Overview:
The Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum was designed to resemble the island’s historic gusuku fortresses, using exposed concrete to create a massive, castle-like presence. Its Brutalist style, combined with cultural symbolism, makes it one of Japan’s most distinctive contemporary public buildings.

Okinawa Prefectural Museum, Okinawa

The Okinawa Prefectural Museum miniature concrete model is made for people who love Japan beyond Tokyo. The Ishimoto Architectural & Engineering Firm completed the museum and art museum in Naha in 2007. Its massive, sloping concrete walls are modelled on Okinawa's historic gusuku castles. It's a contemporary building rooted in Ryukyuan heritage, and proof that Brutalism is still evolving. This concrete model of the Okinawa Prefectural Museum captures its fortress-like form at 9cm, a solid concrete sculpture for a desk or shelf. It's for Okinawans, visitors who have explored Naha, and architects interested in contemporary Brutalist architecture, and it's a distinctive gift for a Japan lover. Each miniature concrete building is hand-cast in solid concrete, so every one carries its own surface.
