Building Information

Location: York, England
Architect: Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners
Completed: 1968 Status: Grade II Listed Brief Overview: Central Hall at the University of York stands as an iconic Brutalist structure on the bank of the campus lake. Serving as a multi-purpose venue, it hosts exams, lectures, concerts, and ceremonial events. Its striking cantilevered design integrates with the surrounding nature, offering views across the lake through glass walls. Though primarily made of reinforced concrete, the building’s bold form enhances its role as a centerpiece on York’s West Campus. With a capacity of 1,100, Central Hall remains a hub for university life and gatherings.

My Risograph Prints

I often go hunting for Brutalist buildings and photograph them wherever I can get to them — car parks, bus stations, university towers, housing estates. Some of the ones in this collection have already been demolished.

Photographing them is how I collect them; printing them is how I share them.

I think Risograph suits concrete. It's a stencil process: soy-based ink pushed through a drum one layer at a time, soaking into the paper rather than sitting on top of it in a glossy film. You get grain, texture and gorgeous matte blacks, and small variations from one print to the next that mean no two are quite identical. I think this makes it look and feel more like concrete.

Every print is produced with an independent artisan printer here in the UK, on 170gsm Munken Pure Rough Premium paper. The soy-based inks replace petroleum ones — lower in solvents, easier to recycle — and the press needs no heat to fuse them, so it draws a fraction of the power of a laser machine. This makes all of my prints affordable and eco-friendly.

Central Hall Risograph Print — Lakeview

Every University of York student knows this view: Central Hall across the lake, upside-down and improbable, with the geese making a nuisance of themselves in the foreground. This risograph print takes it from the far bank so the inverted ziggurat roof reads clearly against the sky — a building that widens as it rises, which should feel wrong and somehow doesn't. Printed A3 in black and white on heavy textured paper, the riso grain softens the water and leaves the concrete sharp. Yorkshire Brutalism on campus, and one of the most distinctive university buildings in the country. A graduation gift for anyone who graduated inside it, and good A3 wall art for anybody who likes a building with the confidence to balance on its point.
