Building Information

My Risograph Prints

I often go hunting for Brutalist buildings and photograph them wherever I can get to them — car parks, bus stations, university towers, housing estates. Some of the ones in this collection have already been demolished.

Photographing them is how I collect them; printing them is how I share them.

I think Risograph suits concrete. It's a stencil process: soy-based ink pushed through a drum one layer at a time, soaking into the paper rather than sitting on top of it in a glossy film. You get grain, texture and gorgeous matte blacks, and small variations from one print to the next that mean no two are quite identical. I think this makes it look and feel more like concrete.

Every print is produced with an independent artisan printer here in the UK, on 170gsm Munken Pure Rough Premium paper. The soy-based inks replace petroleum ones — lower in solvents, easier to recycle — and the press needs no heat to fuse them, so it draws a fraction of the power of a laser machine. This makes all of my prints affordable and eco-friendly.

Spaghetti Junction Risograph Print — Caught in the Middle

There's a spot in the middle of Gravelly Hill where the roads pass above you on every side and the noise arrives from nowhere in particular. This risograph print was taken from down there, caught in the middle, with the columns marching off in each direction and the decks closing over the top. It's the closest thing Birmingham has to a cathedral. Printed A3 in black and white on heavy textured paper, riso ink holding the deep shade beneath the spans. Birmingham Brutalism at its most overwhelming, and the only one of these prints that genuinely conveys the scale. A3 wall art for anyone who has walked the canal towpath underneath it, and an unexpected gift for an architect who thinks infrastructure counts.
