Building Information

Location: Smallbrook Queensway, Birmingham, UK
Architect: James A. Roberts
Completed: 1962
Status: Facing redevelopment proposals/demolition

Brief Overview:
The Ringway Centre, often called the “snaking building,” was designed by James A. Roberts as part of Birmingham’s first inner ring road. Its curving concrete façade and continuous run of ribbon windows made it one of the most distinctive expressions of the city’s 1960s modernisation. Though threatened by demolition, it remains a symbol of post-war ambition and a touchstone for the movement to protect Birmingham’s modern heritage.

Smallbrook Queensway – Ringway Centre (Triptych Set)

The Ringway Centre miniature concrete model is made for people who have walked beneath that long curve on Smallbrook Queensway and felt what Birmingham's post-war ambition looked like. James A. Roberts' 1962 snaking building is one of the defining images of Birmingham Brutalism, and the fight over its future has made it a rallying point for the city's modern heritage. This concrete model of the Ringway Centre comes as a triptych: three hand-cast pieces that join into a 28cm run, or spread out across a shelf, mantelpiece or desk. It's for Brummies at home and away, campaigners, architects and lovers of Brutalist architecture, and it's a Birmingham gift with real meaning. As a set of concrete sculptures, it has the weight and texture of the real building, and every section is one of a kind.
