Building Information

Location: Kirkdale, Liverpool, UK
Architect: Edmund Nuttall Ltd. for Tate & Lyle
Completed: 1957
Status: Still standing, Grade II listed

Brief Overview:
The Tate & Lyle Sugar Silo was built to store raw cane sugar arriving at Huskisson Dock. Stretching over 130 metres in length, the silo’s Brutalist form is defined by tall concrete ribs and a dramatic sense of mass. Though industrial in origin, it’s recognised today as a powerful example of mid-century design—earning it Grade II listing for its architectural significance and enduring presence on Liverpool’s historic waterfront.

Tate and Lyle Sugar Silo, Liverpool

If you know Liverpool's North Docks, you know the Tate and Lyle Sugar Silo, even if you've never been inside. This Tate and Lyle Sugar Silo miniature concrete model captures the 1957 sugar store at Huskisson Dock. It's more than 130 metres long, and its tall concrete ribs give an industrial shed the presence of a cathedral. It's now Grade II listed. This concrete model of the sugar silo stretches 9.5cm along a desk, shelf or mantelpiece, and its ribbed profile catches the light. It's made for Liverpudlians, dockers' families, industrial heritage fans and designers who love rhythm and repetition, and it's a Liverpool gift that rewards people who look closely. As a miniature concrete building, it's hand-cast, heavy and slightly different every time.
