Brief Overview:
The Barbican Centre is the cultural heart of the Barbican Estate—home to concert halls, theatres, cinemas, galleries, and libraries. Built over two decades and opened in 1982, it remains one of Europe’s largest multi-arts venues. A triumph of Brutalist design, its textured concrete, layered volumes and complex internal landscape make it one of the most distinctive and immersive buildings in London.

Making my concrete model

Some buildings feel like whole worlds. The Barbican Centre is one of them. Tucked deep within the Barbican Estate, this vast, multi-level complex is all walkways, shadow lines, terraces and towers, a sculptural maze that hosts some of London’s most vital cultural life. Concerts, films, exhibitions, stillness. Brutalist concrete with a pulse.

It’s one I’ve revisited again and again. From the horizontal striations to the bold cantilevers and raw texture, the Barbican Centre resists simplification. Capturing its layered mass in miniature meant choosing what to keep and what to hint at—what detail to honour, and what feeling to preserve. The final model holds that balance.

A weighty fragment of a complex whole, ready to keep close.

The Barbican Centre, London

If you've ever got pleasantly lost in the Barbican Centre on the way to a concert, this Barbican Centre miniature concrete model is a small souvenir of a very big building. It opened in 1982 after two decades of construction, and Chamberlin, Powell and Bon's arts centre is still one of Europe's largest. Its layered volumes and textured concrete make it the heart of London Brutalism. This concrete model of the Barbican Centre captures that layering at 9.5cm, a piece of concrete art for a desk, shelf or studio table. It's made for concert-goers, members, staff, architects and lovers of Brutalist architecture, and it's a lovely gift for an architect or an arts lover. Pair it with the Barbican towers for the full estate. Each miniature concrete building is hand-cast, with the weight and texture of solid concrete.
