Some buildings look impossible until you stand beneath them. The Pirelli Building in New Haven, designed by Marcel Breuer and completed in 1970, is one of the most daring office blocks in America. Its dramatic raised base, created by removing two floors from the midsection, gives it a gravity-defying presence. Standing by Interstate 95, it’s a Brutalist landmark that feels at once monumental and sculptural.
This model celebrates its bold profile. The balance of solid and void, the slender shaft floating above the open base. These were the details that needed to translate in miniature. I worked carefully to keep the sense of weight and lightness, strength and delicacy.

Brief Overview:
The Pirelli Building, also known as the Armstrong Rubber Building, was designed by Marcel Breuer as the US headquarters for the Armstrong Rubber Company. Its striking form, with two missing floors creating a dramatic gap, made it a defining piece of American Brutalism. Vacant for years, it has since been beautifully restored and repurposed as Hotel Marcel, preserving its iconic silhouette.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
