Model 011_Brunel Lecture Theatre – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings make an impression the moment you walk past them. The Lecture Centre at Brunel University does exactly that. With its stepped concrete volumes, deep-set windows, and bold geometric form, it rises out of the Uxbridge campus like a sculptural engine of thought. Built in the late 1960s, it’s a standout example of Brutalist educational architecture, designed to shape space around learning, not show.
This was a joy to model. There’s something about the precision of it, with the balance of vertical and horizontal, the recessed bays, the rhythm of the blockwork, that lends itself beautifully to concrete. Still, it took time to get the scale right. In miniature, every plane matters. Now it feels like the building I remember.
A fragment of an academic icon cast and held in the palm of your hand.

Brief Overview:
Part of the original core of Brunel University’s campus, the Lecture Centre is one of the most recognisable Brutalist buildings in British higher education. It now stands as a protected landmark and a lasting symbol of mid-century academic architecture.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials
Materials
My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
