Building Information

Location: Poplar, East London, UK
Architect: Ernő Goldfinger
Completed: 1967
Status: Grade II* listed, residential

Brief Overview:
Balfron Tower was built for the Greater London Council as part of a social housing scheme. Its separate service tower, connected to the main block by access bridges, allowed for uninterrupted living space in the residential floors. Goldfinger famously lived in the building after completion to better understand its design in use. Today, it is recognised as one of the most significant Brutalist towers in the UK.

Balfron Tower, London

If you know the story of Goldfinger moving into flat 130, the Balfron Tower miniature concrete model will feel personal. Ernő Goldfinger's 1967 tower in Poplar was the first draft of Trellick, with the same separate service tower and access bridges, and it remains one of the most important pieces of East London Brutalism. This concrete model of Balfron Tower captures that split silhouette at 8cm. It's small enough for a desk or shelf but has the presence of a much bigger building. It's made for East Londoners, residents past and present, architects and lovers of Brutalist architecture, and as a Brutalist architecture gift it comes with a real story. Set it beside the Trellick Tower model to own the pair. Hand-cast in solid concrete, this miniature concrete building has its own weight, texture and small, unrepeatable marks.
