Model 001_New Street Station Signal box – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings leave a mark because they never tried to blend in.
The New Street Signal box is one of them. Brutal, unapologetic, and utterly unique, it has stood watch over Birmingham’s railway lines since the 1960s. With its layered concrete massing, deep shadow lines, and fortress-like stance, it remains one of the most distinctive signal boxes ever built in Britain.
It was one of the first models I ever attempted—and one I’ve returned to again and again.
The form is deceptively complex. Each face carries a different rhythm, a different weight. Getting the sharpness right in the casting, especially at this scale, meant starting from scratch more than once. But it was worth it.
Now it’s here. A scaled-down structure with heavyweight presence.

Made to feel personal, whether you passed it every day on your commute, stood beneath it on a platform, or simply admired its defiance.
This model holds that feeling. It works as a quiet centrepiece, a conversation starter, or a way to honour one of Birmingham’s most iconic Brutalist survivors. A reminder that beauty doesn’t always ask for permission.

Architect: Bicknell & Hamilton with Ray Moorcroft (British Rail)
Completed: 1965

Brief Overview:
Perched above the tracks at Birmingham New Street, this five-storey concrete signalbox was built as part of British Rail’s post-war modernisation plan. Its bold Brutalist form—stacked, windowless, and sculptural—divides opinion but commands attention. Still in active use, it remains a powerful example of mid-century transport infrastructure designed with architectural intent.

ALL EU ORDERS processed through our Etsy Store HERE
My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials
Materials
My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
