Building Information

Location: Barbican Estate, City of London, UK
Architect: Chamberlin, Powell and Bon
Completed: 1973
Status: Grade II listed, residential tower

Brief Overview:
Cromwell Tower was the first of the Barbican’s three 43-storey residential towers to be completed. Rising above the estate’s podium and gardens, it established the vertical rhythm and design language that Lauderdale and Shakespeare Towers would follow. It remains a defining feature of the City of London’s skyline and a landmark of Brutalist housing design.

Making my concrete model

Some towers become part of how we see a city. Cromwell Tower, completed in 1973, was the first of the three residential towers at the Barbican Estate. Designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, it rises 43 storeys above the City with a distinct profile of recessed balconies and vertical concrete fins. Together with Lauderdale and Shakespeare Towers, it defines one of the most ambitious housing projects ever built in Britain.

This model captures its precise vertical rhythm. The balance of the bays, the set-back balconies, and the clarity of proportion had to be carefully refined at a smaller scale. I worked to make sure the cast carries the same presence that makes the real tower stand tall in London’s skyline.

A small cast of the first Barbican tower, made for residents, visitors, and admirers of one of the greatest achievements of post-war housing. This model is a keepsake of a tower that set the standard for the Barbican’s bold and enduring vision.

Cromwell Tower, Barbican Estate

The Cromwell Tower miniature concrete model is a piece for people who love the Barbican: those who live there, work in the City, or simply walk the highwalks for the view. Completed in 1973, Cromwell was the first of Chamberlin, Powell and Bon's three Barbican towers, and its serrated balconies and bush-hammered concrete set the tone for London Brutalism at its most confident. This 10cm concrete model of Cromwell Tower stands like a slim sculpture on a desk, shelf or windowsill. It's for Barbican residents, architects, architecture students and anyone drawn to Brutalist architecture, and it makes a thoughtful Barbican gift or gift for an architect. Collect it with Lauderdale and Shakespeare Towers to complete the skyline. Each miniature concrete building is hand-cast, with the weight and texture of solid concrete and marks that make it unique.
