Model 062: Cumbernauld Town Centre – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.

Some buildings are all about imagined futures, and leave a lasting imprint, whether or not the world is ready for them.

Cumbernauld Town Centre was one of the boldest post-war experiments in Britain. Built to serve as a megastructure for the whole community, it combined shops, housing, offices, and public facilities into a single concrete organism. Ambitious, surreal, and full of complexity, it became both iconic and controversial, admired for its vision, and criticised for its scale.

I knew I had to make this model before it disappeared completely.
Working from original plans and photographs, I focused on the central spine block as the heart of the structure. Its layered forms, jagged silhouette, and sense of mass were a challenge to scale down without losing its character. What’s left now is a miniature memory of a massive idea.

A fragment of Cumbernauld’s future-past—preserved in concrete.

This model carries the weight of a vision that is flawed, imaginative, and deeply human. It’s a piece of Scotland’s architectural history, designed to hold meaning and provoke thought.

Building Information

Location: Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, Scotland
Architect: Leslie Hugh Wilson for Cumbernauld Development Corporation
Completed: 1967 (first phase)
Status: Under partial demolition
Brief Overview:
Cumbernauld Town Centre was designed as a futuristic multi-use megastructure for Scotland’s first New Town. Blending retail, housing, and civic space, it stood as a radical alternative to conventional town planning. Though widely debated and partially demolished in recent years, its architectural significance endures as one of the UK’s most ambitious Brutalist constructions.

ALL EU ORDERS processed through our Etsy Store HERE

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials

My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Shipping & Returns

Free standard shipping on all UK orders.

We aim to ship within 30 days but priority shipping can be purchased if you require faster delivery.

You can cancel or return you order at any time. Once I receive the product back undamaged you will receive a full refund (excluding postage).

Care Instructions

Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.

My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.

Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
