Queen Elizabeth Square

Location: Glasgow, Scotland
Architect: Sir Basil Spence
Completed: 1962
Status: Demolished 1993
Brief Overview: Queen Elizabeth Square (or Hutchesontown C) was located in the Gorbals, Glasgow which was notorious for poverty and overcrowding- some of the worst conditions in Western Europe at the time.   Sir Basil Spence was appointed to design a series of modern high rise towers that would replace the tenement slums- it would be the largest project of it's kind in the UK.  Drawing inspiration from Glasgow's rich shipbuilding heritage, and from his trip to Marseille to visit Le Corbusier's iconic Unite d'Habitation-  Spence presented visions of Gardens in the Sky- with washing hanging out on balconies to provoke images of ships masks.  Sadly the project was a failure- poor construction and poor application of concepts for climate meant Queen Elizabeth Square suffered from flooding, asbestos and increasing levels of crime.  After another flood in 1989, many residents chose to be rehoused rather than return once repairs had been made, and eventually  in 1993 Queen Elizabeth Square was demolished.

Our concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
