Model 023_Balfron Tower – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings tell their own story through form alone. Balfron Tower, designed by Ernő Goldfinger and completed in 1967, rises over Poplar with its distinctive separate service tower linked by elevated walkways. Built as social housing, it was both a bold architectural statement and an experiment in community design. Over time, it has become one of London’s most studied and celebrated Brutalist landmarks.
This model had to get the proportions exactly right. The slender main block, the offset service tower, the rhythm of the windows all needed careful balance in miniature. It’s a design of contrasts: tall yet grounded, open yet enclosed. I wanted the model to carry that same presence in the palm of a hand.
A small cast of a tower that helped define a movement.

Building Information
Location: Poplar, East London, UK
Architect: Ernő Goldfinger
Completed: 1967
Status: Grade II* listed, residential
Brief Overview:
Balfron Tower was built for the Greater London Council as part of a social housing scheme. Its separate service tower, connected to the main block by access bridges, allowed for uninterrupted living space in the residential floors. Goldfinger famously lived in the building after completion to better understand its design in use. Today, it is recognised as one of the most significant Brutalist towers in the UK.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials
My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
