Balfron Tower

Location: London, England
Architect: Erno Goldfinger
Completed:
1967
Status:
Grade II Listed
Brief Overview:
Balfron Tower contains 146 homes, has 26 storeys and stands 84m tall.  It is the smaller older brother of Goldfinger's later building- Trellick Tower.  So pleased with the design- Goldfinger and his wife moved into Flat 130 for a time- and would throw parties for residents where he would discover what they liked and disliked regarding the building.  All this served as research for the design of Trellick Tower. In 1996 Balfron Tower was Listed, and in 2006 following a vote by residents, ownership was transferred from Tower Hamlet Council to a Housing Association.  This would prove controversial as refurbishment would follow a few years later, with residents being told in 2010 they had to move out for Health and Safety during the refurbishment.  Ultimately, despite many campaigns- no social housing was retained once reopened and all the apartments were sold off for private housing (except six apartments that were retained as Heritage apartments- restored to their original condition). There is no shortage of cultural references for Balfron Tower through film and music- with it featuring in music videos by artists including the Verve and Oasis, and used in numerous BBC and ITV series as well and Denzel Washington's film For Queen and Country, and Danny Boyles iconic 28 Days Later.

ALL NON UK ORDERS processed through our Etsy Store HERE

Our concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
