Some buildings come to define an entire skyline. The NLA Tower in Croydon, also known as No. 1 Croydon or the “Threepenny Bit Building,” has stood since 1970 as one of South London’s most distinctive high-rises. Designed by Richard Seifert, its faceted concrete form and rhythmic pattern of angled bays give it a sculptural presence that has made it both a local landmark and a national icon of post-war architecture.
This model captures its unusual geometry. The tower’s chamfered edges and repeating facets were carefully reduced to miniature scale to preserve the rhythm that makes it so instantly recognisable. Getting the proportions right meant working through several versions until it felt true.

The NLA Tower (No. 1 Croydon) is a 24-storey commercial high-rise designed by Richard Seifert. Nicknamed the “Threepenny Bit Building” for its faceted form, it became the defining symbol of Croydon’s post-war redevelopment. Once controversial, it is now Grade II listed and celebrated as a distinctive modernist landmark.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
