Model 041_UEA Ziggurats – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings are as unforgettable as the lives lived within them. The Ziggurat Student Halls at the University of East Anglia, designed by Denys Lasdun and completed in the late 1960s, are among the most iconic pieces of British Brutalism. Stepped terraces cascade down the riverside landscape, each room with its own balcony, combining community and individuality in one of the boldest visions of student housing ever built.
This model celebrates their distinctive rhythm. The stepped profile, the deep shadow lines, and the balance of mass and openness had to be carefully scaled down to preserve their character. It was important to me that the cast felt both geometric and humane, like the original buildings themselves.
A small cast of one of Britain’s most iconic student halls.

Brief Overview:
The Ziggurat halls of residence at UEA are a defining work of British Brutalism. Built between 1964 and 1969 as part of Denys Lasdun’s wider campus plan, their stepped terraces maximise light and views while creating a striking sculptural profile along the River Yare. They remain some of the most recognisable university buildings in the UK.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials
Materials
My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
