Model 053_Central Hall, University of York – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings seem to float between water and sky. Central Hall at the University of York, completed in 1967, was designed by architect Andrew Derbyshire of Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners. Sitting above the campus lake, its hexagonal form and stepped concrete terraces make it one of the most distinctive university buildings in Britain. Both futuristic and serene, it remains the visual and social heart of the campus.
This model captures its symmetry and stillness. The inverted ziggurat, angular geometry, and sense of balance were carefully scaled to preserve the character of the real building. I wanted the cast to reflect the calm precision that makes it so instantly recognisable.
A small cast of one of Britain’s most poetic university buildings.

Brief Overview:
Central Hall is a multi-purpose performance and lecture building at the University of York. Its striking concrete and glass structure, surrounded by water, was designed to create a central gathering point for the university’s new campus in Heslington. The building’s geometry, acoustics, and setting have made it one of the most celebrated works of post-war academic architecture in the UK.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials
Materials
My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
