Brief Overview: La Pyramide, a striking brutalist high-rise designed by Italian architect Rinaldo Olivieri, is a landmark in Abidjan’s Plateau district. Built between 1968 and 1973 during the "Ivorian Miracle," it stands as one of the first high-rises in the city and a bold reimagining of the traditional African market. The concrete pyramid, paired with elevator towers, was designed to house commercial spaces, offices, studios, and restaurants, with a massive basement for a supermarket, nightclub, and parking for 1,800 cars. Though innovative, the building faced challenges with space limitations and high maintenance costs, leading to its decline in the 1980s. Despite periods of abandonment and a history of stalled renovations, La Pyramide remains an iconic piece of Abidjan's architectural heritage, symbolising both the city's ambitious past and hopes for a restored future.
