Some buildings are designed to hold history and look like history themselves. The Okinawa Prefectural Museum in Naha was built in the early 2000s, but its fortress-like form and weathered concrete finish make it feel timeless. Inspired by the island’s ancient gusuku castles, the building combines Brutalist clarity with a strong sense of place, standing as both cultural centre and landmark.
This model was all about texture and mass. The sloped walls, deep recesses, and layered geometry needed to feel solid, monumental, and rooted. Shrinking it into a hand-held scale meant focusing on its bold profile and the way shadow moves across its surfaces.
A small cast of a museum that is itself a work of architecture.

Brief Overview:
The Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum was designed to resemble the island’s historic gusuku fortresses, using exposed concrete to create a massive, castle-like presence. Its Brutalist style, combined with cultural symbolism, makes it one of Japan’s most distinctive contemporary public buildings.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
