Building Information

Location: New Haven, Connecticut, USA
Architect: Marcel Breuer
Completed: 1970
Status: Still standing, adaptive reuse in progress

Brief Overview:
The Pirelli Building, also known as the Armstrong Rubber Building, was designed by Marcel Breuer as the US headquarters for the Armstrong Rubber Company. Its striking form, with two missing floors creating a dramatic gap, made it a defining piece of American Brutalism. Vacant for years, it has since been beautifully restored and repurposed as Hotel Marcel, preserving its iconic silhouette.

Pirelli Building, New Haven

The most famous thing about this building is what's missing. The Pirelli Building miniature concrete model captures Marcel Breuer's 1970 headquarters for the Armstrong Rubber Company in New Haven. Two floors are left out between the lower research block and the offices above, so the top seems to float. It stood empty for years beside I-95 and has now been restored as Hotel Marcel, with its silhouette intact. This concrete model of the Pirelli Building keeps that floating block and the void beneath at 7cm, a piece of concrete art for a desk or shelf. It's made for Breuer fans, New Haven and Yale people, and lovers of American Brutalism and Brutalist architecture. It makes a fine pair with the Breuer Building and Rudolph Hall models. Each miniature concrete building is hand-cast in solid concrete.
