Hollings Building
Location: Manchester
Architect: LC Howitt
Built:1960
Status: Grade II Listed
Brief Overview:
The Toast Rack, formerly known as the Hollings Building, is a Brutalist landmark in Fallowfield, Manchester, England. Finished in 1960, it was originally designed as the Domestic Trades College and later became part of Manchester Polytechnic, which eventually evolved into Manchester Metropolitan University. The "Hollings Campus" closed in 2013. The building was designed by Leonard Cecil Howitt, the city's architect, and earned its iconic name, the Toast Rack, because of its distinctive form, reflecting its origins as a catering college. Architectural critic Nikolaus Pevsner referred to it as "a perfect piece of pop architecture." In April 1998, it was granted Grade II listed status by English Heritage, who described the structure as "a distinctive and memorable building that demonstrates this architect's love of structural gymnastics in a dramatic way." For many, the building embodies the spirit of the Festival of Britain and the optimism in architecture that emerged in the post-World War II era.
