Model 063: Sirius Building – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings come to symbolise something much bigger than themselves.
The Sirius Building in Sydney does exactly that. Perched above the harbour in The Rocks, this modular concrete block stood as a monument to public housing, designed with care for working-class residents displaced by redevelopment. Its stacked, Brutalist geometry and grid of square windows gave it a quiet, futuristic dignity that became deeply loved and fiercely defended.
This model carries all of that with it. Getting the proportions right was a challenge with its asymmetry, the offsets, the rhythm of solid and void. It took time to bring out that feeling of strength and balance in a small cast. I wanted it to feel like a keepsake with meaning, not just a miniature.
What’s left is a concrete fragment of a building that still sparks memory, protest, and pride.

Brief Overview:
The Sirius Building was built as public housing in central Sydney following protests against forced evictions in The Rocks. Designed with bold Brutalist forms and stacked concrete modules, it was intended to serve the community and preserve social diversity in a rapidly gentrifying area. Despite attempts to demolish or sell it off, Sirius became a symbol of resistance and is now recognised for its architectural and cultural significance.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials
Materials
My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
