Building Information

Location: The Rocks, Sydney, Australia
Architect: Tao Gofers (NSW Housing Commission)
Completed: 1980
Status: Partially sold, some units retained as affordable housing

Brief Overview:
The Sirius Building was built as public housing in central Sydney following protests against forced evictions in The Rocks. Designed with bold Brutalist forms and stacked concrete modules, it was intended to serve the community and preserve social diversity in a rapidly gentrifying area. Despite attempts to demolish or sell it off, Sirius became a symbol of resistance and is now recognised for its architectural and cultural significance.

Sirius Building, Syndey

If you stood with the Save Our Sirius campaign, this Sirius Building miniature concrete model is a piece of that fight. Tao Gofers designed the 1980 public housing block in The Rocks for tenants displaced by redevelopment after the green bans protests. Its stacked concrete modules and terraces were meant to keep a community in place. Attempts to sell it off made it a rallying point, and it's now recognised as a landmark of Australian Brutalism. This concrete model of the Sirius Building captures its stepped, stacked form at 9.5cm, a concrete sculpture for a desk or shelf. It's made for Sydneysiders, former residents, housing campaigners and lovers of Brutalist architecture, and it's a gift with a cause behind it. Each one is hand-cast in solid concrete.
