Building Information

Location: Steglitz, Berlin, Germany
Architects: Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte
Completed: 1976
Status: Still standing, awaiting future use

Brief Overview:
The Bierpinsel was built as part of a larger traffic and shopping complex in West Berlin. Its concrete structure with cantilevered upper floors made it both practical and sculptural, while its unusual form quickly earned it a nickname that stuck. Despite changing functions and periods of closure, it remains a landmark of experimental 1970s architecture in Germany.

The Bierpinsel, Berlin

Berliners call it the Beer Brush, and it's hard to argue. The Bierpinsel miniature concrete model captures Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte's 1976 tower in Steglitz, where cantilevered upper floors perch on a single concrete trunk above a road junction and U-Bahn station. It has been a restaurant, a canvas for street artists and, for long stretches, an empty mystery. It's a cult piece of West Berlin pop architecture. This concrete model of the Bierpinsel keeps that treetop form at 8cm, a fun concrete sculpture for a desk or shelf. It's made for Berliners, fans of 1970s futurism and lovers of Brutalist architecture, and with the Berghain model it makes a good pair as a Berlin gift. Each one is hand-cast in solid concrete.
