Building Information

Location: University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK
Architect: Feilden and Mawson (to Denys Lasdun's designs)
Completed: 1968 (subsequently expanded)
Status: Still in use, university library
Brief Overview:
Located at the heart of UEA’s Brutalist campus, the library was designed to complement the bold forms of Denys Lasdun’s ziggurats. Its horizontal profile and long, glazed frontage provide contrast and calm. Expanded over time, it remains a vital space for students and staff, and a quiet piece of Norwich’s architectural story.

Making my concrete model

Some buildings become part of the rhythm of daily life, so familiar, you almost forget how strange and striking they really are. The library at the University of East Anglia is like that. Set beside Denys Lasdun’s iconic ziggurats, it plays a quieter role on campus—but there’s something quietly powerful about it. An elegant gridded stretch of concrete and glass, grounded and purposeful. It feels like it's always belonged there.

I started this model thinking it would be simple. But like the building itself, the sophisticated detail reveals itself slowly. Deep window reveals, subtle massing, a form that shifts as you move around it. It took careful work to get the scale and presence right in miniature. I wanted it to feel solid and grounded, just like the original.

A piece of UEA campus life—captured in concrete.

UEA Library, Norwich

If you spent late nights revising at UEA, this UEA Library miniature concrete model is a small piece of those years. Feilden and Mawson built the library in
1968 to Denys Lasdun's designs, and it has been extended since. Its long
horizontal profile brings a calmer note to Norwich's Brutalist campus, a
counterpoint to the ziggurats nearby. This concrete model of the UEA Library
captures that low, layered massing at 7cm, a quiet desk sculpture for a study
or shelf. It's made for UEA students and alumni, library staff, architects and
anyone who loves Brutalist architecture on campus, and it makes a thoughtful
graduation gift. It sits well beside the UEA Ziggurats model. Hand-cast in solid concrete, every miniature concrete building has its own weight and
surface.
