Model 070_Castlemead Tower and Broadmead Car Park – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.
Some buildings tell the story of a city’s rise and transformation. Castlemead Tower and the adjacent Broadmead Car Park stand together at the edge of Bristol’s shopping district, marking a bold moment in the city’s post-war regeneration. Broadmead Car Park opened in 1960, a product of Bristol’s post-war rebuilding and the growing need for car access to the city centre. Its bold concrete decks and clean, functional geometry were typical of early modernist civic design. Two decades later, Castlemead Tower rose beside it, completed in 1981 and designed by A. J. Hines. The tower brought a new vertical rhythm to the skyline, its concrete and glass façade marking Bristol’s shift into a new era of urban confidence.
This model unites the two structures as one sculptural composition.
The horizontal mass of the car park and the slender vertical lift of the tower balance one another, creating a dialogue between weight and height. I wanted the cast to capture that contrast, showing how both buildings tell different sides of the same story in concrete.
A small cast of two buildings that shaped Bristol’s modern city centre.

Brief Overview:
Broadmead Car Park was among the first major post-war parking structures built in Bristol, forming part of the city’s ambitious road and retail redevelopment. Castlemead Tower, designed by A. J. Hines and completed in 1981, rose beside it as Bristol’s tallest office building. Together, they represent two distinct moments in the city’s architectural evolution: one horizontal and utilitarian, the other vertical and corporate, both bound by the enduring presence of concrete.

My concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.
My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.
Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
