Model 084_University Library, Glasgow – Miniature Concrete Model
Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory.

Some buildings become worlds of their own. The University of Glasgow Library and the connected Hunterian Art Gallery, designed by William Whitfield and completed in the late 1960s, stand among the most significant pieces of post-war architecture in Scotland. Rising above the historic campus, the library's powerful tower and layered concrete forms create a striking contrast with the university's Victorian buildings. Together, the library and gallery represent a moment when higher education embraced a bold modern future.

This model captures that relationship. The challenge was balancing the library's vertical presence with the lower, interconnected forms of the Hunterian. The tower, terraces, and geometric volumes all needed to work together at a smaller scale. I spent time refining the proportions until the model felt like a true reflection of the original composition.

A small cast of one of Scotland's great academic landmarks.

Architect: William Whitfield
Completed: 1968
Status: In use, university library and art gallery

Brief Overview:
The University of Glasgow Library was designed by William Whitfield as part of the university's expansion during the 1960s. Its 12-storey tower became an immediate landmark on the Glasgow skyline and remains one of the largest academic libraries in Europe. Connected to the library is the Hunterian Art Gallery, home to one of Scotland's most important collections of art and artefacts. Together they form a major example of post-war educational architecture, combining monumental concrete forms with spaces dedicated to learning, research, and culture.

My concrete models are made to order and individually hand-cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and textures from the curing process in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Materials

My concete models are all made using a fine grain quickset cement with a polymer additive. This gives a good balance between strength and detail casting. However concrete is a brittle material so the models are delicate and can break with impact.

Care Instructions

Concrete is a brittle material so these models are delicate objects. They can be chipped or cracked easily and need to be protected from knocks or falls.

My concrete mix is also not waterproof so you should protected your model from damp and moisture.

Extreme changes in temperature will cause expansion and contraction inside the concrete model potentially leading to cracks forming. Keep your model out of direct sunlight and away from heating systems.
